When a global pandemic upended healthcare, the economy, and life itself, small operations like the Cayuga Ingredients distillery in upstate New York had to roll with the punches. They had been outfitted to distill drinkable spirits. Instead, they refocused at light speed to launch a unique product for a weird, new world.

Ethanol of tomorrow
Whey is a liquid by-product of dairy production. To farms, it’s an inevitable waste. To Cayuga Ingredients, it’s the main event.
With a new distilling method, whey can be converted into spirits like vodka, while producing fresh water, animal feed, and capturing CO2 in the process. (Yes, sustainable alcohol. The future is now!)
But in 2020, distilleries were called upon for something very different. In just a few weeks, BOS was born.

BOS came out of the gate as a one-of-a-kind product.
Rather than churn out another Purell imposter, we embraced the brand’s inherent quirkiness. But the market presence of phony, toxic hand sanitizers was (and is) a real issue, so elevating the safety highlights was paramount.

A better whey forward
To date, tens of thousands of gallons of BOS have been purchased and donated across the country, by people, companies, and even entire municipalities.
Cayuga Ingredients will begin making whey-derived spirits as planned, but BOS will continue being produced in tandem.
