For several years, our team designed nearly all the promotional and clinician material for the Medtronic TYRX Absorbable Antibacterial Envelope. Combining visual appeal with clear information design, we navigated those limitations deftly.

What the heck is it?

Medtronic is the world’s largest med tech company. Their products cover nearly all areas of the human body, but their bread and butter (or bread and low-cholesterol margarine) has long been cardiac devices.

The TYRX Envelope is a mesh, antibiotic infused pouch that goes over a pacemaker when it’s surgically implanted in a patient. With it, infection risk from the surgery is cut down by a wide margin.

Medtronic rolled out a massive brand overhaul during our partnership. Our team retrofitted old designs and produced new work within this framework.

Our goal was to constantly push the limits of the strict grid system while taming the large amounts of technical copy. Every so often, promo items like stickers allowed us to color outside the proverbial lines.

The FAQ brochure was a mini case study in being limber under creative constraints.

The piece could not have icons or photos, not even images of the Envelope itself. Instead, we had callouts. We had breathable negative space. Graphs of data were fully re-drawn so that they’d fit the narrow page dimensions. The end result was bold, readable, well-organized, and fully typographic piece that met a narrow ask.
