Hot off the heels of a hugely successful ad campaign, UC Santa Cruz needed to keep the momentum going with a tighter focus on its individual programs and centers.
Over three years, our team produced a suite of brochures, entailing a deep dive into eight academic majors and eight research programs. The visual catch? Each department had their own pre-existing photo libraries they wanted to use. Effectively, sixteen separate clients.

Academic fundraising with a rebellious streak.
Hot off the heels of their wildly successful campaign, “The Original Authority on Questioning Authority”, UC Santa Cruz needed to keep the momentum going with a tighter focus on its individual programs and centers.
Over three years, our team produced sixteen brochures, entailing a deep, but concise dive into eight academic majors and eight research programs.

Passed with flying colors
The first brochures helped fundraising efforts balloon into the millions. Some faculty even asked for their program cover to be printed poster-sized. The Social Sciences Division would soon reach out again with a fresh challenge.
The new pieces had much more copy, needed to look related to the previous set, and had to be similarly cheap to print.
The solution was to build upon a standard letter size fold with an extra half flap. This increased our space and added a dynamic “reveal” element.

A black sheep of higher learning
UCSC ranks as a top research university in the US, but against the likes of Yale and Stanford, they must hold their own when it comes to image.
Since the 60’s, UCSC has been the anti-prestige collegiate haven— a place for the rebellious. The challenge here was to lean into that reputation while conveying academic legitimacy.
Through some print engineering and flexible design, we created a new success story that embraced that dichotomy.
